Desertification threatens up to 40% of our planet's land area.
Desertification, land degradation in arid areas, threatens up to 40% of the world's land surface. Around 2 billion people live in the world's drylands and depend on the natural resources of the area for their livelihoods.
Causes and consequences of desertification
Desertification reduces the productivity of dryland ecosystems and makes it more difficult to graze animals, which in turn increases poverty and leads to political instability.
Desertification is often caused by human activities and climate change, such as biodiversity loss, overexploitation of natural resources, deforestation, overgrazing, and other land degradation activities. Desertification increases when nature is unable to replace the natural resources consumed by humans. Desertification causes the release of carbon dioxide from dying vegetation and the loss of carbon sequestration by plants. Areas that were once carbon sinks now become carbon dioxide sources.
Can desertification be prevented?
Natural desertification cannot be stopped, but desertification can be slowed down by protecting existing vegetation and preventing human-induced desertification. Desertification can be reduced, for example, by limiting grazing, planting vegetation, reforestation, and more sustainable farming practices.
Globe Hope supports Mifuko Trust in eastern Kenya
Various projects and organizations focusing on dryland regeneration are helping local farmers and villages to take action to halt soil degradation and increase new plant cover.
Esimerkiksi vuonna 2012 perustettu Mifuko Trust avustusjärjestö edistää maaseudun naisten toimeentuloa ja hyvinvointia Makuenin ja Machakoksen alueilla itäisessä Keniassa, tukee alueen kestävää kehitystä, sekä ylläpitää paikallisia käsityötaitoja.
Mifuko Trust organizes Mifuko Women Development (MWD), a community-based organization operating in Mbooni sub-county of Makueni county. The organization is composed of 26 women self-help groups, as well as other self-help groups participating in the organization's projects. The organization is currently acting as the local implementation partner with Mifuko Trust for the implementation of their ecological sanitation project in rural parts of Makueni.
